Reach Isn't Everything in Ezines

In advertising, the number of people who see your ad is called "reach." You might figure the more subscribers an email newsletter reaches, the more results your ad will generate. Not exactly.

Some of the Internet's biggest ezines often don't get very good response. One client told me, "I advertised in a 'zine that goes to 600,000 and didn't get a single reply." On the other hand, some smaller ezines always pull well for advertisers.

Why? A lot has to do with how closely people read an ezine. Ezines that consistently provide valuable information on a particular popular topic tend to do best. Readers open each issue eagerly expecting helpful or interesting information they can put to work now.

One of the Net's most effective ezines is AIM (and I'm not just saying this because the owners of AIM also publishes my daily tips newsletter<g>). AIM consistently features great articles on Internet business. Their audience reads each article carefully and responds to ads in big numbers.

An ezine that is all or mostly ads won't pull as well for you unless the ads are all focused on a topic that readers want info on. For example, classic car collectors would appreciate an ad sheet filled with ads selling hard-to-find cars.

New Year's Revolution by C.J. Hayden

No, that's not a typo in the title. Resolutions are easy; most of us make them at least once a year. A revolution, on the other hand, is something you may not have made since you started your business.

Starting a business is actually quite revolutionary. When you began yours, there were probably many details of your life that changed. Some of those changes were intentional, others accidental; some you liked, some you didn't. Other changes you always meant to make just never happened.

Is your business everything you meant it to be? Is it giving you all that you wanted? Are you satisfied, even delighted with the way your life as a business owner is turning out? If not, perhaps it's time to make a revolution. Here are some revolutionary ideas you might consider:

1. Serve only those clients you care about and enjoy being with. When you work with people you don't enjoy, everything becomes a struggle. Your clients are a key part of your business. You wouldn't hire someone you didn't enjoy working with, so why let them hire you?

Begin today to let go of clients you find difficult to work with, and start seeking out those you really had in mind when you started this business. Have the courage to refuse new clients that don't fit your picture of who you most want your business to serve.

2. Make a plan to reach your income goals. Unless you are independently wealthy, your business not only needs to support you, it needs to provide for your future. Setting goals for your desired income level is a good first step, but to reach those goals, you need a plan.

Create a financial model for your business. How many clients, appointments, billable hours, or contracts will it take to generate the income you want? How much of your time will be required to do that amount of work and do the marketing required to get it? How much money will it cost you in overhead, marketing costs, and admin help? Does the model work?

3. Take enough time for yourself and those you love. The number one reason entrepreneurs name for going into business is time -- more to spend with their families, more flexibility in work hours, or simply more control over how their time is spent. But how many of us actually get this?

Most entrepreneurs spend either too much time struggling to get clients and earning too little money, or become victims of their own success, working too many hours to fulfill clients' demands. You can overcome these problems by combining the financial modeling described above with the approach to marketing outlined below. And don't forget, if you earn enough, you can hire all the help you need.

4. Do more of the work you like doing and less of what you don't. If you're not enjoying the work you do, there's no one to blame but yourself. After all, you're the OWNER of this enterprise. If you can do different work in the same business, start now to make the shift. Loyal customers will follow you if you're still offering services they need.

If more rewarding work would require a new business, join the ranks of the serial entrepreneurs. You started and ran one business, why not another? Life is much too short to do work you don't enjoy, and it doesn't make much sense if you're working for yourself!

5. Build a marketing system that really works. The definition of a system is a selection of related components arranged in a specific order to achieve a common end. Does this describe your marketing? Or is it more like a hodgepodge of random elements jumbled together without a clear goal?

If you want better clients, more money, more time for yourself, and more enjoyable work, an effective marketing system may be the universal solution. Don't know how to build one? Make this the year you learn. Already know how but haven't built it? Get support from a colleague, mentor, coach, or group to make it happen. Have a system but aren't using it? Pull your plan out of the drawer and re-commit to doing what it takes to have the business you always dreamed of.

A Little Humor

Pay Phone

The other day I needed to call home, but the only pay phone I could find was in use. So I stood to the side and politely waited until it was free, thinking it would only be a couple of minutes.

Five minutes went by, and still the man was on the phone. He was just standing there, not saying a word. Two more minutes went by, and he still wasn't talking.

Finally, I tapped him on the shoulder and asked if I could use the phone. I really wouldn't be long, but needed to make an important call.

"Hold your horses," he responded, covering the receiver. "I'm talking to my wife."

A golfer, well into his golden years, had a lifelong ambition to play one hole at Pebble Beach, California the way the pros do it. The pros drive the ball out over the water onto the green that is on a spit of land that juts out off the coast.

It was something he had tried hundreds of times without success. His ball always fell short, into the ocean. Because of this he never used a new ball on this particular hole. He always picked out one that had a cut or a nick.

Recently he went to Pebble Beach to try again. When he came to the fateful hole, he teed up an old cut ball and said a silent prayer.

Before he hit it however, a powerful voice from above said, "WAIT... REPLACE THAT OLD BALL WITH A BRAND-NEW BALL."

He complied, with some slight misgiving, despite the fact that the Lord seemed to be implying that He was going to let him finally achieve his lifelong ambition.

As he stepped up to the tee once more, the voice came down again, "WAIT... STEP BACK... TAKE A PRACTICE SWING." So he stepped back and took a practice swing.

The voice boomed out again, "TAKE ANOTHER PRACTICE SWING." He did. Silence followed.

Then the voice spoke out again. "PUT BACK THE OLD BALL."

A police officer sees a man driving around with a pickup truck full of penguins. He pulls the guy over and says: "You can't drive around with penguins in this town! Take them to the zoo immediately."

The guy says OK, and drives away. The next day, the officer sees the guy still driving around with the truck full of penguins - and they're all wearing sun glasses.

He pulls the guy over and demands: "I thought I told you to take these penguins to the zoo yesterday?"

The guy replies: "I did . . . today I'm taking them to the beach!"

My husband and I had just finished tucking our five young ones into bed one evening when we heard sobbing coming from three-year-old Billy's room. Rushing to his side, we found him crying hysterically. He had accidentally swallowed a penny and was sure he was going to die. No amount of talking could change his mind.

Desperate to calm him, my husband palmed a penny that he happened to have in his pocket and pretended to pull it from Billy's ear. Billy was delighted. In a flash, he snatched it from my husband's hand, swallowed it and demanded cheerfully, "Do it again, Dad!"

Goji May Help Prevent Breast Cancer:

New Research If you're a regular reader of this health resource, you already know I'm a big fan of the juice of the Lycium barbarum plant—better known as goji. It has a wide range of health-promoting effects. At the recent San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, researchers presented a study that revealed exciting new potential for this long-revered Asian berry.

Researchers are always searching for ways to modulate hormone levels and metabolism in the quest to find cures for breast, prostate, ovarian, and other cancers that afflict the reproductive organs. Hormone-dependent cancers are usually more aggressive and difficult to treat. A research team from the Strang Cancer Research Laboratory at Hackensack University presented a study in San Antonio that found that extracts of goji inhibited a specific pathway of estrogen metabolism that is known to encourage the growth of hormone-dependent breast cancers.

More specifically, women with breast cancer usually have accelerated C16-alpha hydroxylation of the estrogen in their bodies. This is a method the body uses to break down extra or “used-up” estrogen, but it yields a product called 17 beta-estradiol, also known as E2—a known promoter of breast cancer growth.

In a test tube-study, the investigators demonstrated that goji caused human breast cancer cells to down-regulate this pathway of estrogen metabolism.

This is huge news, and yet another reason to get your goji!
