Blog Your Way to More Traffic & Sales
by Terri Seymour

Blog is short for web log.  A web log is a journal of sorts that is updated frequently to keep your visitors’ interest.  Blogs are generally of a personal nature and express the opinions and thoughts of the webmaster.  Blogs also contain links and other resources.  Many people think of blogs as “online diaries.”

Blogging is becoming a very popular method of publishing as it does not require any technical knowledge and it can greatly increase the popularity of your site.  Some blogs allow the visitors to post and enter there thoughts and opinions as well.

A blog keeps people coming back to your site and a blog is also very helpful with the search engines because of the ever changing content.  Search engines love new content!

Starting a blog is not hard.  There are sites that provide this service for free.

First step is to take a look at some other blogs to get a feel of how they are done.   Simply pick your favorite search engines, do a search for blogs and spend sometime reading and studying them.  Get familiar with different styles, formats and content until you feel like you know what you would want to do with your blog.

You can then get started on your own blog.  There are lots of sites where you can start your own blog for free:

BlogDrive.com
Blogger.com/start
LiveJournal.com/

Take some time to design your blog.  Decide what color scheme you want to use and the type of layout you want.  Some sites will have pre-designed layouts and templates to choose from or you can edit your own.

After you get your blog designed and set up, test it out with a few posts. Make any necessary changes you feel it needs.  Once you have it tweaked, it is time to get started with your new blog.

Once you start your blog, be sure and promote it heavily.  Post it in blog directories, announce it in groups and on boards.  Put it in your sigtag.

Blog Directories:

BlogWise.com
BlogCatalog.com
BlogHub.com

Do a search for blog directory or submit your blog and you will find many more places to post your new blog!

Be sure and update your blog frequently and make it interesting. Give it some personality!  DO NOT neglect your blog!

Don't get discouraged if your blog is not an overnight sensation.  As with any marketing, it takes time to get noticed.  Keep it fresh and new and interesting and before long, you will be a master blogger!

Pete and Gladys were looking at a new living room suite in the furniture store.

Pete says to the salesman, "We really like it, but I don't think we can afford it."

The salesman says, "You just make a small down payment ... then you don't make another payment for six months."

Gladys wheeled around with her hands on her hips and says, "Who told you about us?"

Lessons From Lycopene

This Powerhouse Nutrient Can Improve Heart Health And Protect Against Cancer

People who live in Mediterranean nations and eat a standard regional diet enjoy substantially reduced risk of the ills that are most feared by Westerners—heart disease and cancer. Their diets are rich in a great many healthful compounds that contribute to their longevity and overall hale and hearty state. Here we're going to focus on lycopene, the element of that diet of which the tomato is the best known source.

Lycopene Overview

Lycopene is a carotenoid, belonging to the same nutrient family as beta-, alpha- and gamma-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. It is a fat-soluble nutrient, which means that it likes to adhere to fats in body tissues and in foods, and that it is better digested when consumed with fat. Unlike other members of the carotene family, lycopene is not transformed into vitamin A.

Lab tests have demonstrated that of all the carotenoids, lycopene is the most potent antioxidant. In foods, it tends to coexist with other carotenoids; antioxidant vitamins, including C and E; and flavonoids, plant chemicals that lend fruits and veggies their brilliant hues.

Studies of populations in several countries have demonstrated that eating plenty of tomatoes (and foods containing tomatoes) is associated with decreased risk of chronic diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disease. Further research, designed to try to identify which aspect of the “love apple” (that's what the French call it—an apt moniker, considering the tomato's salutary effects on the prostate gland) has all these health-promoting effects, has found consistent associations between lycopene levels in blood and body tissues and decreased risk of the most feared modern diseases.

Most of the evidence points to lycopene as most protective against cardiovascular disease and cancer.  There is evidence that it also helps to prevent other conditions, including pre-ecclampsia (a life-threatening condition of pregnant mothers that has been linked with inadequate antioxidant levels) and cataracts. And it appears to enhance lifespan: in a study of nuns aged 77 to 99, those with the highest blood plasma lycopene levels lived an average of 11 years longer than those with low levels!

Advisories about getting adequate lycopene in the diet usually include tips to eat tomatoes cooked in oil. Here's why: Lycopene in food exists in the trans form, and cooking alters the molecule slightly, bending a section of it into the cis form. It turns out this trans/cis hybrid is better absorbed into the body than the trans form.

Also, in an uncooked tomato, lycopene strongly binds to cell membranes, which are made of fat and not easily released. Cooking weakens this bond. (This is also the case with other vegetables rich in carotenes, including carrots.) Fat-soluble carotenes are more easily dissolved in oil than without it.

Extra-virgin olive oil is the best kind of oil with which to cook tomatoes. It is rich in powerful antioxidants, and some research suggests that this type of oil has a special synergy with lycopene that enhances the health benefits of both foods.

Here is a list of foods richest in lycopene (this is the amount of lycopene per 3.5 ounces):

Pizza sauce: 32.9 mg
Tomato paste: 30 mg
Spaghetti sauce: 17.5 mg
Ketchup: 16.6 mg
Tomato juice: 7.83 mg
Fresh tomato: 3.1-7.7 mg
Watermelon, papaya, pink grapefruit, pink guava: 2.0-5.4 mg
