How Business Buyers Are Different From Consumers

Most of the advertising and marketing we see is directed toward consumers. Yet, much of the money spent around the world is for products and services purchased by businesses. For a very long time, business-to-business transactions made up the lion's share of Internet purchases.

Consumers don't necessarily NEED your product or service. If money is tight or the customer isn't convinced they need it, the consumer can just as easily wait until next month or next year to make the purchase.

Businesses often NEED what you are selling right now. Their immediate profits may depend on having it.

Businesses buyers are more knowledgeable. You will often be selling to a manager or specialist who knows your industry inside and out.

Consumers are in a hurry and aren't always interested in reading long marketing copy. Business buyers generally appreciate all the information you can give them. Long copy is no problem.

A Little Humor

Funeral Music

At our local crematorium families are given the chance to chose the music CD they would like to enter the service to.

One family asked to enter to, "Love me Tender."

Well the day of the funeral arrived and the music was started ready for the family to walk in to the service.

Unfortunately the wrong track number was entered into the CD player, and the family found themselves walking in to, "Return to Sender."

A bricklayer at my husband's construction job routinely complained about the contents of his lunch box. "I'm sick and tired of getting the same old thing!" he shouted one day. "Tonight I'll set my wife straight."

The next day the men could hardly wait until lunchtime to hear what happened. "You bet I told her off," the bricklayer boasted. "I said, 'No more of the same old stuff. Be creative!' We had one heck of a fight, but I got my point across.

He had indeed. In front of an admiring audience, he opened his lunch box to find that his wife had packed a coconut- and a hammer.

New Evidence That Anger Is Bad For Your Health

You already know that the physical manifestations of anger are harmful to your body. It causes alterations in levels of cortisol and other so-called “stress hormones” that cause blood pressure and heart rate to rise. Muscle tension increases; the GI (gastro-intestinal) tract gets less blood flow to digest food as energy is diverted to the muscles, resulting in indigestion; sugar cravings increase; and the brain functions less effectively. Now, research has established another significant risk of being angry: increased susceptibility to accidental injury.

Intuitively, most people already get that if they're angry—they're clumsier and more likely to get hurt. Who hasn't, while in an impotent rage, stubbed their toe or had a near-miss accident on the road? But the reality is that the research evidence on this has been mixed. There is some evidence that anger doesn't increase your risk of injury—and some theorize that a little anger actually improves your perceptiveness and reaction time, enhancing your ability to fight and/or flee.

A team led by Daniel C. Vinson, professor of family medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia, conducted a study that involved conversations with 2,517 emergency-room patients who had suffered accidental injury. The conversations were designed to determine out whether or not they had been angry during the hours before the accident. The team also randomly chose 1,856 uninjured control subjects and asked them about their anger levels during the average day.

One-third of the injured people said they had been irritable just before being injured; 18 percent said they had been angry; and 13.2 said they had been hostile. Not surprisingly, the effects of anger in raising risk of injury were much more pronounced in men than in women. One surprising result was that anger was not linked to car accident-related injuries.

The take-home message is that stress can hurt you in many ways. Learning to mitigate the harmful effects of stress on the body is right up at the top of the list of health must-dos. Stress is a complex thing, and can manifest in so many ways that just taking deep breaths and counting to ten may not do the trick for everyone. Investigate yoga, breathing techniques, and counseling to help you get the anger monkey off your back if he seems to hop on there too often.
