Find the Right Audience For Your Offer

Why does advertising NOT work? Why do some products and services fail to sell as much as they should? Usually it is because the offer did not reach the right audience. No matter what you are selling, there are thousands of people who would buy immediately if they only knew about you.

Reaching the right audience can be difficult. If you have been in business very long at all, you have probably placed a few ads that didn't bring in response. Perhaps you placed the same ad in a second publication that flooded your email and telephone with inquiries.

Here's how to determine the audience media attracts: For larger media--like radio, TV, and daily newspapers--you can use ratings info to zero in on the audience a media outlet reaches. This information is sometimes published in the newspaper and is always available through the respective trade publications of various media (check your local library.)

You can also get ratings info from ad agencies, media sales departments (take 'em with a grain of salt), and by striking up a conversation with someone in media.

For Internet and print publications, determine the audience they reach by looking at the kinds of articles they carry. If you see a lot of how-to business tips (like in this publication) you can bet they have a big audience of innovation-oriented entrepreneurs.

The Importance of Multiple Streams of Income

Any prosperous person out there; be that Richard Branson or Bill Gates, knows the importance of having multiple streams of income (MSI’s). If you possess MSI’s then you are already, or, are on your way to being a wealthy individual.

However, it is not just a case of having one or two streams, but several; if one slows down or dries up altogether then others can carry on regardless, enriching your life continually.

Incidentally, it doesn’t have to mean you need to possess the desire to be incredibly wealthy like the gentlemen I mentioned above. It could just simply be the case that you want to gain control of your finances, e.g. pay your debts off or just not have to worry so much about paying for life’s basics. The importance of having MSI’s is still just as essential in the latter case.

The question then you must pose yourself today if you want to become wealthy or have control is: do I possess multiple streams of income?

The Importance of Residual Income

The term residual income (RI) pops up a lot in literature and on the internet, all it actually means though is recurring income. Its income that continues to flow whether you’re there or not, e.g. the interest paid on your savings account at the bank or dividends paid on shares you own.

The importance of RI is that for each of the MSI’s above, each stream should be functioning on a residual basis. These streams require all the time and effort at the outset i.e. from the idea, to the planning, to the implementation, to the checking and refining then they are finalized and left on ‘autopilot’.

You then need to do very little to them after this point, they work for you instead.  You can then begin your next residual income stream and so on and so forth.

This leads to the final questions. Do I have MSI’s? If so, are they on a residual basis?

Where Does Affiliate Marketing Fit In?

Affiliate Marketing fits in perfectly, you don’t even have to set up a residual stream that generates a lot of profit and I’ll tell you why.

Think about it, set up 100 income streams of $1000 per year profit each and you would be making $100,000 a year. Now, think about that more closely…

For an income stream to generate $1000 per year you need to be profiting $83.33 per month  how possible is that? Very. Just with Google Adsense revenue from a reasonably visited website would generate that $1000 a year stream  and likely a lot more.

Affiliate Marketing allows you to set up these multiple streams of income without actually owning the products or services! Couldn’t be better!

You’ve got your whole life to set up these streams too  I’m not talking about overnight success here. If you think this comes overnight you’d better go up the corridor to that ‘Let’s All Live in the Clouds’ seminar.

So, returning to my $1000 a year point, if you could set up a stream generating $1000 per year, could you make it turn into $2000 a year or $166.66 a month? Of course you could, now you only need fifty $2000 a year streams to hit your $100,000 a year target.

Now, upscale each one and it doesn’t take a genius to see that not only is $100,000 a year an achievable target - it may also be an easy target. $200,000 a year doesn’t look far off either does it? How about $500,000?

I’ll leave that for you to ponder over.

A Little Humor

Clarinets are okay

When I played with a symphony orchestra, our union reached an agreement with a major airline about which instruments we could carry on board and which had to be shipped as luggage.

A cellist was dismayed to find that his delicate, expensive wood instrument was consigned to the rougher handling and cold temperatures of the baggage hold.

He neatly solved the problem. Cello in hand, he approached the flight attendant at the gate and asked,

"May I bring my clarinet on board?"

Scanning her list, she replied, "Clarinets are okay, have a good trip," and, smiling, waved him on.

AT THE airport my husband and I decided to buy some medical insurance. The clerk at the counter asked us where we were going.

"Puerto Plata," I answered.

"Is that in Mexico?" she asked.

"No," I said, "it's in the Dominican Republic."

"Oh," she replied, "you'll have to forgive me. I never was very good at geometry."

A Pill For Compulsive Gambling?

A new study from the University of Minnesota has found that daily doses of a drug called nalmefene, which has been used experimentally to control alcoholism, has the effect of reducing the urge to compulsively gamble.   The study involved 207 subjects undergoing treatment for compulsive gambling. About two-thirds of the patients who took the drug showed improvements, compared to a third of the placebo group. One-third of the subjects dropped out because of nausea and other side effects.

First, the usual disclaimer: yes, compulsive gambling is an awful problem; yes, it destroys lives and families and empties bank accounts. It is not a problem to be shrugged off or taken lightly. A drug could be useful in the short-term, to help the patient get far enough in counseling to kick the habit for good without pharmacological help.   This having been said, I mean to point a finger at the latest psychiatric claim that because a neurotransmitter-tweaking drug reduces the outward symptoms of a behavioral problem or addiction, we can conclude that it's a “biochemical imbalance” that causes the problem or addiction in the first place.

Robert Freedman, M.D., editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry, said that “the study is part of emerging evidence that gambling, once thought to be a problem in moral integrity, is instead a problem in brain biology and can be successfully treated.”   We've seen how slippery that slope can get. We've seen how the unproven “biochemical imbalance” theory has put millions of people on neurotransmitter-tweaking drugs for years or even for life, using a so-called “biochemical imbalance” as justification.

Journalist Robert Lee Hotz, writing in The Nation, calls it “the latest effort to control the biology of misbehavior.”   Sure, nalmefene can probably reduce the urge to gamble or drink. But this does NOT mean that there's something wrong with the brain that the drug is needed to fix. These drugs unbalance neurotransmitters, they don't “balance” them. Unbalancing these chemicals can change behavior, but they're not fixing anything that is broken—at least, not that any current evidence has proven to be broken.

  Past studies of SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) like Prozac and Zoloft, and lithium, a drug often used to treat bipolar disorder, have not yielded great results with compulsive gamblers. Nalmefene appears to help because it specifically affects neurotransmitters that yield the blissful "high" that gamblers get when indulging their compulsion. It blocks the action of dopamine, which creates feelings of reward, and of natural opiates that yield feelings of pleasure.
Does this sound like a viable long-term therapy to you? Correct a so-called biochemical imbalance and rob the person of the capacity for pleasure and reward?   Hopefully, this won't catch on. There has only been preliminary research on this, so it remains to be seen whether this experimental treatment will hit the mainstream.
