Trivia

Jim Scotti, planetary scientist at the University of Arizona, says an asteroid as small as 99 feet in diameter "could destroy a city." To date, no known big asteroid is on a collision path with Earth. A near miss of one in 1996 was found only four days before it passed within 280,000 miles of Earth, a hairbreadth by space standards.

How to Set Realistic Goals and Achieve Them
by Johannes Nefischer

Realistic goal setting is one of the potent tools that we can use to achieve our dreams and succeed in our endeavors. It allows us to set up our priorities, organize our resources and efforts, make big decisions, and ultimately realize our life dreams. Goal setting is the very first step we must take for every successful task. Lao Tzu puts concisely, "The journey of ten thousand miles begins with the first step."  However, realistic goal setting have challenging requisites that must be accomplished in order to succeed:

However, in order to succeed, RGS requires the development of an achievable goal statement (AGS). AGS is the architectural blueprint of our goals. It contains all the necessary resources and supplies required to keep us on track. Moreover, developing a workable AGS requires well thought-out plans and substitute courses of action. As always, when you define and identify your goals, make sure they conform to the following time-proven criteria:

Specific - know exactly what you are determined to achieve Measurable - it must have achievable results so that success can be measured and quantified Action- Oriented - it must follow a set of activities or action towards achieving specific goals Realistic - set realistic and achievable mini-goals towards the realization of the ultimate goal Time and Resource Constrained - mini-goals and end-goals must have a definite deadline or a completion timetable as allowed by available resources at your disposal

Break down your goals into smaller, manageable sub-tasks so you don't get stressed by the overwhelming tasks that lay ahead. Prioritizing your sub-tasks and categorizing them in the order that they have to be accomplished makes them easier to work on. By doing this exercise, you now have a list of achievable goals!

Inspiration and commitment are also a necessary and important ingredient of your quest for success. Without motivation, you will not want to do anything. Without commitment, you will loose the desire to complete what you have begun.

To help you keep on track, you need a system of reminders and accountability for every goal and task that you need to accomplish. This can be done by sharing your dreams and aspirations with people you love so that in their own way, they can help you fight the good fight and keep you from failure.

Review and Assessment Goals are dynamic; they are not fixed in stone. As we progress by accomplishing our micro-goals and mini-goals, which are part of our overall ultimate life goal, we may discover that there are steps we have included that are not necessary and steps we have omitted which are very important. Having a regular review and assessment schedule of our action plan allows us to make the necessary changes, which helps us decide and determine our priorities.

A Little Humor

Wow
=-=

There was a knock at the door. It was a small boy, about six years old. Something of his had found its way into my garage, he said, and he wanted it back.

Upon opening the garage door, I noticed two additions: a baseball and a broken window sporting a baseball-sized hole. "How do you suppose this ball got in here?" I asked the boy.

Taking one look at the ball, one look at the window, and one look at me, the boy exclaimed, "Wow! I must have thrown it right through that hole!"

Morris was invited to a party but unfortunately, during the evening, he lost his wallet.

Morris, not being of the shy kind, stood on a chair and shouted, "Excuse me ladies and gentlemen, I've just lost my wallet with over $1,500 in cash in it. To the person that finds my wallet, I will give $150."

A voice from the back of the room shouted, "I will give$175!"

-----

The seven-year old told her mom that a little boy in her class asked her to play doctor.

"Oh, dear," the mother nervously sighed. "What happened, honey?"

"Nothing, he made me wait 45 minutes and then double-billed the insurance company."

Handy Household Tips

If you accidentally over salt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a peeled potato and it will absorb the excess salt for an instant "fix me up".

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl Mindell

Shouldn't I Just Drink Water—Lots And Lots Of Water?

It looks as though the party line on water consumption—that we should be drinking eight eight-ounce glasses of pure water every day, not to be replaced with juice, tea, coffee, or soda—may not be founded in scientific fact.

I bought into the eight-a-day line, too, because I understand how the human body works, and I know that drinking this much water is not going to hurt you, and that it will help your body feel cleaner and clearer. But it looks like you could drink less and not suffer any negative consequences. And it looks like drinking tea or coffee (in moderation) instead of water is a viable alternative. It won't make you dehydrated, or quench your body's thirst less effectively.

In fact, the push to get people to drink more water appears to have led to a rise in overhydration. Too much water will overly dilute the amount of sodium in your body—a condition called hyponatremia. Three cases of fatal hyponatremic encephalopathy, or swelling of the brain caused by too much water leading to over-dilution of sodium in the body, were reported in U.S. military recruits in the early years of this decade. Over 250 cases of overhydration were reported in athletes and soldiers following those initial reports, with 7 fatalities.

Athletes who guzzle liquids during events or workouts appear to be particularly vulnerable. The symptoms of overhydration are similar to those of dehydration, so these unfortunate folks may try to drink more to compensate for the hyponatremia they are suffering from.

Your body can only process about 1 to 1½ quarts of water each hour, with a maximum of 12 quarts of water advisable per day. Anyone engaging in intense endurance workouts or competitions lasting four to six hours should be sure to replace salt as well as water, because both of them are excreted in sweat. Replacing only water is a one-way ticket to hyponatremia. Sports drinks replace electrolytes (including sodium), but they don't contain enough salt to prevent hyponatremia.

If you aren't sure whether you are drinking too much H20 during your workouts, try weighing yourself before and after you exercise. If you weigh more after than before, you need to back off on the fluids.

With water, more isn't better. Be moderate, especially during workouts. Sip occasionally when thirst strikes, but don't feel compelled to guzzle water at every turn. Your body knows when it's time for a drink.

Do coffee and tea cause you to lose more fluid than drinking straight water? Apparently, no. According to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, there is no difference between the fluid retention of routine drinkers of caffeinated beverages and drinkers of water. They also found that juice, milk, and sodas supply the same amount of hydrating fluid as the same amount of water.
