The Lesson Hidden In Every Tree by John Gilmore
I once had a big tree in my back yard. A giant, stately oak, it was the biggest tree I had ever seen. One day, to my surprise, it fell. In the center there was a big hole revealing the tree had been hollow all that time. It's amazing, a tree that looked so lively and strong was really hollow. It reminded me of many of our lives in the modern era.
One of my friends who is a college professor once said that people getting advanced degrees in his classes only showed him how many people could blindly follow the rules and do what they were told. This is a very pessimistic view, but even in the most pessimistic views sometimes there is a bit of truth. Many people are quite successful because they can memorize, they can do research well, they can write, or even speak effectively in front of crowds.
They can have houses, cars, good families and many things, but their lives can still be hollow, like the big oak in the back yard, because they are only doing what they are told they are supposed to do to be good people. Sometimes they become so bored with their lives they don't even remember what is important. That is why it is very important for us to remember the beginning. Why did we want to succeed? Why did we want all of those things? If we can remember what we were looking for, and if we can remember the magic in the world that we experience when we were younger and happy, we will keep our center full, by keeping our hearts full of love and joy.
The Shaolin say that the heart of the pine is full [soft and spongy] and the rings around bamboo are hard. Since the heart of the pine is full and the rings of the bamboo our hard, in the winter when things freeze there is room for expansion, without breaking. There is a solid structure combined with softness and flexibility holding the pine and bamboo together, so that the coldness of winter will not destroy them.
Even so, as human beings in the center of ourselves and our lives we should find softness and firmness. We should be flexible, yet structured--working hard, studying hard, following the rules, but always leaving time for relaxation and play. We should always leave time to be creative and time to celebrate our successes and mourn failures. We should always enjoy the discovery of new things on the job, instead of hardening ourselves against creativity and excitement just to push forward and obtain a high standing.
Putting away the need for success, putting away the need for reward, and working diligently for the sake of creating a better world, or a better product for others, keeps the heart full. Being around groups of people who don't look at wealth and status as success, but our quality of life as success, keeps softness and firmness at the center of our lives so that we do not fall. We do not collapse. By applying strength with flexibility and applying flexibility with strength, we become creators of the world. We do our work in joy and with peace. When the strong winds come we will not fall, because we will be strong enough to stand, yet flexible enough to bend.
The lesson learned from that old oak is that you can look strong, brilliant, and be a giant, but on the inside you or your life can be hollow. If we allow our lives to be hollow, one day, even if it is the last day of our lives, we will eventually crash and fall like that big tree. If our hearts are full of love, joy and creativity, and our lives are a refection of our hearts, we can withstand the coldness of any strong winds that may buffet us. We will take that love wherever we go and share it with a bruised and hurting world. This is the fruit of a full heart and a truly meaningful life.

A Little Humor
The President and the Puppies
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=President Clinton is out jogging, and he encounters a man with some new born puppies. Clinton asks the man what kind of puppies they are, and the man responds, "They're Democratic puppies, Mr. President."
Clinton thinks that is so great that the next day he brings the first lady to see these puppies for herself. He asks the man to tell Hillary what kind of puppies they are. The man responds, "They're Republican puppies."
The president looks puzzled and says, "Yesterday, you told me they were Democratic puppies."
The man smiles and says, "Yesterday, they were new born, today their eyes have opened!"

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl Mindell
Ambien Causes Sleepwalking, Sleep-eating, And... Sleep-Driving?
Happily for Big Pharma, prescriptions for sleep drugs have risen almost 60 percent since 2000. The best-selling prescription sleep aid in the world right now, Ambien (zolpidem tartrate), is currently stirring up controversy. Apparently, a rare side effect of the drug is a tendency to sleepwalk, or to eat or even drive in your sleep. Some users have been involved in bizarre traffic accidents.
Senator Patrick Kennedy, for example, stated after his recent smash-up that he took Ambien and Phenergan, a drug used to treat allergies and nausea, at the same time before going to bed. According to an article published in the Boston Herald, Kennedy says that he "simply do[es] not remember getting out of bed, being pulled over by the police or being cited for three driving infractions." He ran into a retaining wall, which is consistent with the tendency of drivers with Ambien in their systems to crash into stationery objects upon which they've become fixated in their sleep-medicine-induced haze.
Although it's believed that alcohol may have played a role in some sleep-driving episodes, the drug's labeling admits that this side effect can happen—if rarely—without any other medications. This is what happens when a drug studied in populations of a few dozen or a few hundred people start being used by millions of people. Any hazards are going to end up more significant when the number of people using a drug gets so enormous and human error and/or stupidity—using alcohol or other drugs at the same time or taking too much—is factored in.
According to an article in Newsweek, New York attorney Susan Chana Lask has spoken with over 300 patients who have experienced these kinds of side effects with Ambien. (One frightening story: a woman who took Ambien before bed answered the door to a stranger in her sleep and was assaulted.) Lask has filed a class-action lawsuit against Sanofi-Aventis, the drug's maker.
Competitor Lunesta (eszopiclone) is having its own problems. Apparently, this drug has a bitter aftertaste that one user—writing at an Internet chat site and cited in a BusinessWeek blurb in the March 27, 2006 issue—compared to "a herd of wild animals nested in my mouth." Another user at the site writes that "I've never tasted urine, but I could imagine it would taste something like that."
Sleeplessness is one problem that can, in the vast majority of instances, be dealt with without drugs. Here are a few pointers:
• Stick with a schedule with regards to bedtime. Try to go to sleep at about the same time each night. Early to bed, early to rise is your best bet, as that will match your body's natural daily rhythms.
• Don't eat for at least three hours before going to bed. No caffeine after 3 p.m.
• Keep your bedroom dim after dark, and try to make it completely dark once it's time for lights-out. Even the light from a digital clock can reduce melatonin secretion, which is your body's natural sleeping pill.
• If racing thoughts and worries keep you up, try to do a relaxation and deep-breathing practice right before bed. Try audio CDs with soothing music. Work with a therapist or spiritual counselor to devise a relaxation regimen that works for you. Aromatherapy can help too. Try a dab of lavender oil at the base of your throat.
• Don't keep a TV in the bedroom. Reserve that room and your bed for sleep and sex. If you can't sleep, try reading something calming and pleasant in bed with a book light.
• Get some vigorous exercise every day, if possible, or at least four days a week.
• Sip soothing chamomile tea, or try relaxant herbs like valerian, passionflower, or kava a half-hour before bed.
• Two or three times weekly, you can use a small dose of melatonin—3 mg or less—before bed. There's no evidence of sleepwalking with melatonin, much less sleep-driving or sleep-eating!
