Knowledge and Wisdom Support Your Successes by Sandy Karn

Knowledge is a very important element in your success in business. It is true that you really need to know your business, your products, their benefits to the buyer and learn about people skills.  All these things are a given.  Without them,  how far would you get?

I believe it is possible to get a college degree and be a walking encyclopedia of knowledge, but if you don't have wisdom where will you be going?

Wisdom is the golden nugget that makes the major difference in your life.  Being wise to life, your mind, your reality and your existence is the bonus to your success.  Wisdom is not something you go to bed one night without it and wake up the next day with it.

Wisdom comes from experience.  It comes from the desire to find it deep within yourself.  It is all there.  All you have to do is uncover it.  My suggestion here is that you do just that.

Be asking yourself questions like:  What is life all about? What is my role here in it?   What am I here to learn?  What's it all about anyway?  How can I surround myself with wisdom? What can I learn from others?

Can I keep my mind from running away with itself listening to my ego and other superficial things that can lead me astray? Can I keep my mind from pulling me into fear?  Can I hold on to my faith that will sustain truth?  What is truth?  Can I keep my mind from distorting it?

Can I stay in the inner core of my being so I can see deeply and clearly what my life is really all about?  If I can, I will live more in peace, freedom, harmony and joy and just maybe I can share that wisdom with the other people in my life who I care about.

That sharing is not about telling them.  It is about role- modeling it so they might have a better chance of getting it.

Give some thought and answer the questions above.  There is a lot there.  You could take weeks to contemplate these questions and more wisdom could evolve through their answers.

A Little Humor

Career Choice
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

An older couple had a son, who was still living with his parents.

The parents were a little worried, as the son was still unable to decide about his future career. They decided to do a small test. They took a ten-dollar bill, a bible, and a bottle of whiskey, and put them on the front hall table, and hid, pretending they're not home.

The father's plan was: "If our son takes the money, he will be a businessman, if he takes the bible, he will be a priest - but if he takes the bottle of whiskey, I'm afraid our son will be a drunkard."

So, the parents waited nervously, hiding in the nearby closet. Peeping through the keyhole they saw their son arrive. The son saw the note they had left. Then, he took the 10-dollar bill, looked at it against the light, and slid it in his pocket. After that, he took the bible, flicked through it, and took it. Then, he grabbed the bottle, opened it and took a whiff, to get assured of the quality. Then he left for his room, carrying all the three items.

The father slapped his forehead, and said: "Darn. Our son is going to be a politician!"

One of the kindergarten teacher's Chinese-Canadian students was about to get a new little brother or sister. The teacher asked every few days if the blessed event had happened yet. The little boy was getting more excited as the days rolled by. Finally, one day the teacher asked her usual question, and the child broke into a big smile and nodded.

"Well, what was it?" the teacher asked.

The little boy, full of excitement and wonder, blurted, "Chinese!"

While working at a pizza parlor I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6 pieces.

He thought about it for some time before responding. "Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don't think I'm hungry enough to eat 6 pieces."

Our family-owned restaurant is the setting for many of our discussions about how to handle the customer who asks, "What's good tonight?"

Obviously, we would never serve anything we didn't think was good. I braced myself one Saturday night when I heard the dreaded question posed to my husband.

He calmly replied, "Anything over $17.95."

Health Tip of the Week

More HRT Confusion

Two headlines appeared in two different national newspapers on the same day, about the same study. The day was Valentine's Day, February 14, 2006. In the Wall Street Journal, the headline read: "Estrogen's Heart Benefits Gain Support." USA Today's headline read, "Final estrogen report finds no heart disease benefit." And yes, these two reporters were writing about the same study—an analysis of the WHI (Women's Health Initiative) data, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Is it any wonder women are confused about this issue?

Let's look at the Wall Street Journal article first. Reporter Tara Parker-Pope describes a new analysis of the Women's Health Initiative study results, which you may recall caused a big stir in 2002 when increases in heart disease and breast cancer risk were found in women who used HRT (hormone replacement therapy) after menopause. (After those results came out, some 50 percent of women who were using HRT stopped cold turkey.) She writes that this analysis "provides the strongest evidence to date that estrogen doesn't pose a heart risk to younger women and may even offer additional protection." The article goes on to report that many scientists are questioning whether the health risks of HRT were overstated in the aftermath of those early WHI results—whether those results only applied to women who were long past menopause when they started to use PremPro (the estrogen drug Premarin plus the progestin Provera). Further analysis of the data find that women who start estrogen at a younger age—not estrogen plus progestin, but just estrogen, which can only be done by women who have had a hysterectomy—may actually have reduced risk of heart disease later on. Those who were found to reap heart-health benefits from estrogen replacement started the estrogen between the ages of 50 and 59; any woman who started estrogen therapy after age 60 did not benefit, and anyone 70 and over seemed to have increased heart risk with estrogen.

Parker-Pope tells us that the Archives of Internal Medicine study did not evaluate stroke or blood-clot risks—both of which have been found to increase with estrogen administration—and it did not evaluate the use of estrogens plus progestins. No woman with a uterus can use estrogens alone without some form of progesterone to counteract their carcinogenic effects on the uterine lining. It's well-known that estrogens alone are good for the heart; the problem is the progestins that usually have to be given along with them, which have been found to erase estrogen's heart-healthy effects.

The bottom line of the Wall Street Journal article: timing of HRT matters. Once 10 years have passed since menopause, no benefit is to be had, but younger women who are considering using HRT short-term to treat menopausal symptoms may not need to worry about heart risks later on...as long as they don't use progestins, too. As soon as you add progestins to the picture, you increase risk of breast cancer, blood clots, and heart attacks.

Now, let's look at the USA Today article, penned by Rita Rubin. She starts out, "Taking estrogen does not reduce post-menopausal women's risk of a non-fatal heart attack or dying from coronary heart disease, although some data suggest it might protect women in their 50s, according to the final report on the subject from a landmark study." She writes that the Archives study "did find fewer heart attacks and coronary deaths in the women in their 50s who took estrogen," but—unlike Parker-Pope—she points out that there were too few cases of heart attack and coronary death to ascertain whether the results were due to chance or to effects of the HRT. She also tells readers that the results of this final analysis of WHI data is not being used to recommend HRT for long-term heart disease prevention—for which it had been used for years, even decades, before the 2002 WHI study came out.

Rubin addresses the progestin issue, and brings up the other troubling evidence that has come up over the course of the Women's Health Initiative: one study of 10,739 women who took estrogen only (as Premarin) found increased risk of stroke, and another study in this same group, released in 2004, found an increased risk of dementia when the estrogens were given to women between the ages of 65 and 79. Rubin ends the article by reporting that JoAnn Manson, a co-author of the Archives paper, said "that the new finding should be reassuring to women who are concerned about the safety of taking estrogen for relief of menopausal symptoms." No mention in the end of the article about where progestins or progesterone fit into this picture, or of which women need to think about this issue.

So, in the end, articles meant to inform end up further heightening confusion. If estrogens are now thought to be safe for menopausal symptoms, what about progesterone? Are all women who have uteruses still recommended to use progestins, despite the risks that they will erase any heart benefits from Premarin? What about natural hormones, which are available in many forms? Why isn't anyone in the mainstream press or mainstream medical world helping women to figure out whether natural hormones are a viable alternative? After all, natural progesterone and estrogens appear to be safer, and just as effective for dealing with menopausal symptoms.

The answer here is clear: the funding isn't there to look at natural hormones. The big drug companies, having taken a hard hit with the downfall of Premarin and Provera and related synthetic HRT, are pouring all kinds of energy and money into finding a new niche for their products. They aren't going to look at natural alternatives to their synthetic products because natural hormones cannot be patented (unless there's a unique delivery system involved, as with the natural micronized progesterone pill, Prometrium).

The gold standard resource on natural hormones for women in premenopause, perimenopause, and menopause are the books by John R. Lee, M.D., and Virginia Hopkins: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause, and What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer.
