Postcard Marketing Success Tips by Bob Leduc
Postcards may not be the most popular marketing tool in our modern high-tech business world. That's too bad because they can be a very cost-effective way to generate website traffic and sales leads ...if you do it right.
Here are 5 proven tips that will help you create powerful marketing postcards guaranteed to produce a big response.
1. Make a Big First Impression
People like getting postcards from friends and relatives. They don't like getting advertising mail. Make your postcard look at first glance like a message from a friend instead of like an advertising announcement. It creates a warm friendly reception for your postcard.
For example, use the same typestyle and layout you would use to send a postcard to a friend. Use a date at the top ...even if it is something like "Monday, 11:15 AM". And include a real "from" name at the bottom...even if it's not handwritten.
2. Get Right to the Point
Postcards get delivered in a format that's ready to read. Take advantage of this by making the biggest benefit you offer the first thing the reader sees. This will make them want to read the rest of your postcard.
For example, state your biggest benefit as a headline at the top of your postcard ...or make it the first item on a bulleted list of benefits ...or highlight it in bold type if it's in the body of your postcard.
3. Sell the Right Thing
Marketing postcards are most effective when they are used to generate website traffic or sales leads. They are less effective for closing sales because they don't provide enough space for a detailed sales message.
Design your message to sell the reader on seeking more information instead of trying to close sales.
For example, don't include much (if any) actual information about the product or service you are selling on your postcard. Instead, promote the major benefit (or benefits) they provide. Then persuade the reader to visit your website or to take some other action to get more information from a source where you can close sales.
4. Be Clear and Direct
You have only a few seconds to get the reader's attention and to persuade them to take the action you want. So keep your message brief and make sure the reader can clearly understand it with just a quick glance.
For example, limit your postcard to just a few short sentences with blank lines between them. Reduce several sentences to a short bulleted list to save space and reading time.
Always end your postcard by telling the reader exactly what to do to get more details - and include a reason to do it immediately.
5. Stimulate Fast Action
Just telling your reader how to get more information is not enough. You have to give them a reason to respond NOW or many will put your postcard aside to do later ...then get involved with other things and forget it.
For example, offer them a discounted price, a special bonus or some other benefit if they reply to your postcard by a deadline.
Postcards are not new or high-tech. But that's not a reason to ignore them. They can generate a lot of website traffic and sales leads for a very low-cost.
Follow these 5 proven tips and you will discover how to create powerful marketing postcards guaranteed to produce a big response.

A Scotsman, planning a trip to the Holy Land, was aghast when he found it would cost fifty dollars an hour to rent a boat on the Sea of Galilee. "Hoot mon," he said, "in Scotland it wouldna ha been more than $20."
"That might be true," said the travel agent, "but you have to take into account that the Sea of Galilee is water on which our Lord Himself walked."
"Well, at $50 an hour for a boat," said the Scotsman, "it's no wonder He walked."

A man in a bar has a couple of beers, and the bartender tells him he owes $8.
"But I already paid you! Don't you remember?" says the customer.
"Okay," says the bartender, "if you said you paid, then I suppose you did."
The man then goes outside and tells the first person he sees that the bartender can't keep track of whether his customers have paid or not. The second man then rushes in, orders a beer, and later pulls the same stunt.
The barkeep replies, "Okay, if you said you paid, then I suppose you did."
The customer then goes outside, sees a friend, and tells him how to get free drinks. The third man hurries into the bar and begins to drink highballs. Some time later, the bartender leans over and says, "You know, a funny thing happened in here tonight. Two men were drinking beer, neither paid, and both claimed that they had paid. The next guy who tries that stunt is going to get his butt...."
The man interrupts, "Don't bother me with your troubles, bartender. Just give me my change and I'll be on my way."

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl MindellIn Praise Of Sleep
With a new grandchild in the picture, I'm reminded anew of the value of sleep in overall health and well-being. The difference between a person who has had a good night's sleep and the one who has been up four or five times to care for a baby, can be pretty dramatic. If you've been there, you know. And surveys suggest that a significant proportion of the U.S. population does not get enough sleep. Whether it's because of insomnia, parenting responsibilities, or a late-night TV habit, lack of sleep is hazardous to your health. Scientists have found that lost sleep incurs a "sleep debt" that has to be repaid—at least, in part—in order to maintain good health.
An extremely rare hereditary disease called FFI (familial fatal insomnia) has helped sleep researchers to better understand why a good night's sleep is so important. It was first identified in an Italian family, several members of whom lost the ability to sleep at all over a period of several months. (Records dating back to the 1600s showed that members of this family, related to Italian royalty, had been suffering from this disease for hundreds of years.) No drug or other treatment puts these unfortunate people to sleep. They quickly deteriorate, fall into a wakeful and delirious sort of coma, and die within a year and a half of the onset of the disease (which comes after the age of 30, usually in one's 50s or 60s). When the brain of one man with the disease was analyzed, a genetic abnormality was found that had causes and effects similar to mad cow disease, involving renegade molecules called prions. FFI affects the thalamus, the area of the brain that is responsible for putting us to sleep. In the man's brain, scientists also found plaques similar to those that form in people with Alzheimer's disease. (An interesting side note: researchers from China have found that the sleep hormone melatonin may protect against Alzheimer's disease.)
Studies show that sleep is prime time for the brain and body to deal with the free radicals formed during the day, and to repair the damage those free radicals do to fats, proteins, and DNA. During NREM (non-rapid-eye movement) sleep and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, the human brain enters two states very different from the waking state. During NREM sleep, the brain's metabolic activity decreases, and it may be the time during which damage is repaired and new neurons (brain cells) grow. Brain metabolic activity is high during REM sleep—which comprises about 20 percent of the night's sleep—and it's where vivid dreams happen. Investigators believe that REM sleep is integral to the formation of new memories and the assimilation of newly learned information.
Losing just an hour and a half of sleep one night can reduce your alertness by up to 32 percent the following day. This loss of alertness gives rise to cognitive and memory impairments that can really make a dent in your productiveness at home and at work. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration blames drowsy drivers for 100,000 car crashes leading to 71,000 injuries and 1,500 deaths each year. Newer evidence suggests a role for sleep deprivation in obesity.
Some evidence even suggests that getting the right amount of sleep is the most important factor in deciding your longevity. A survey of over a million Americans was performed in the 1950s by the American Cancer Society. Full information was collected on exercise, smoking, sleep, and diet in each subject. After six years, the survey was given a second time, and every person who had died in the interim was tallied. Of all the variables examined, habitual sleep time correlated best with mortality. Those who slept for four hours or less or more than nine to ten hours a night had the highest mortality rates, while those who slept for around eight hours were least likely to die. Another follow-up study nine years later reflected the same results.
You can be missing out on sleep without even knowing it if you have a sleep-related breathing disorder like sleep apnea (which is as common as diabetes and asthma, affecting some 24 percent of adult men and nine percent of adult women, and that is a risk factor for high blood pressure) or chronic snoring. People with sleep apnea—many don't even know they are waking dozens of times each night because of breathing obstruction—drive as badly as drunk drivers and have enormously increased risk of car accidents.
What should you do? First, make good sleep a priority. Go to bed at the same time each night, as soon as you feel tired. Avoid eating within two to three hours of bedtime, and don't take in caffeine after 3:00 in the afternoon. A bout of vigorous exercise during the day will help improve sleep quality. Try a relaxing bedtime ritual, such as a warm bath, listening to peaceful music, relaxing yoga stretches, or meditation. Keep your bedroom dim, and when it's lights-out, make sure that the room is as dark as it can be. Even the light from a digital clock is enough to suppress production of melatonin, the hormone made in the pineal gland that triggers restful sleep. Ban the TV from the bedroom—reserve the boudoir for sleep and sex. Leave worries at the bedroom door. If you lie down and can't sleep, get up and go to another room and read or do some other relaxing activity until you're sleepy, then return to bed.
If you snore, or if your sleep quality still suffers despite these steps, look into a medical evaluation to ensure you don't have sleep apnea. Losing weight often helps get rid of snoring and sleep apnea. Those little sticky strips you put across the bridge of your nose help with minor cases of snoring. If you need extra help to get to sleep, try melatonin (no more than two or three times a week) or relaxing supplements and herbs like 5-HTP (a precursor of melatonin), valerian, passionflower, or kava (safe to use every night).
Keep in mind that not everyone requires eight or nine hours' sleep. Some do fine on six or seven and feel sluggish or worse with more. And during the long, light days of summer, you'll require less sleep than during the short days of winter. Once you have put a healthy sleep schedule in place, you'll find that you naturally wake after you've had adequate rest.
