Is now the time to transition to Firefox by Richard Armaldi

Many of you have considered installing the Firefox browser but haven't yet because of the unknown. Some of you may have even tried it but went back to IE (Internet Explorer) because no one was around to explain how to use and configure it. Some of you have no idea why you would even want to switch from using IE to Firefox. This article will cover all that and more including how to create a one of a kind unique browser just for you. You can't do that with IE.

Firefox came about mainly due to users being frustrated with IE's never ending security issues. Although IE was on almost every PC in the world, there was no way to customize it to fit the users wants and needs. Firefox achieved explosive growth simply because it addressed the two issues of security and customization offering a secure browser and allowing the users to fully control the look, feel and operation. Firefox is open source software meaning it will always be customizable to your tastes not to mention more secure and stable.

Why is open source better? With open source, anyone can view the code allowing thousands of independent users to constantly test it for security and improvements. Internet Explorer is closed source, so if the folks at Microsoft don't discover a vulnerability, it's likely that a malicious hacker can exploit it for months without you, the user, even knowing it exists. The primary purpose behind open source software is to allow all users to customize it to their likes, wants and tastes but a great side benefit is that the security is tested as well. This huge base of independent users/testers makes it much more likely that any future issues will be found by them before anyone can exploit them.

What does that mean to the average user? You will be using a safer, more secure browser that you can customize any way you like. You can share your customizations with other Firefox users and you can benefit from others work as well. Your browser won't be leaking your personal information as you use it and, if an issue is discovered with Firefox, it's usually fixed within 24 hours. IE receives only occasional updates so security holes can linger for months.

How can I customize Firefox? Firefox has extensions, themes and plug-ins that allow you to control the look, feel and function of your browser. If you want to keep an eye on the current and forecasted weather, you can add in a plug-in to place a small image in the corner that will show your current and projected weather as well as alert you to storm advisories the minute they're issued. Astronomers will love the Suncult plug-in that shows today's sunrise, high noon and sunset as well a current moon phase and next full moon. Tired of the growing number of banner adds on your favorite Web pages? Make them disappear forever with the Adblock plug-in. That's just a tiny example and their are literally thousands of customization options to chose from. Firefox will even show you how to create you very own customized plug-ins that do whatever you command.

Firefox is an extremely stable and secure browser. Your private information will stay secure. Over time, the security and stability will improve even more due to it being open source. You can create a unique customized browser that works the way you want it to. Finally, if you're the creative type, you can build and share your very own Firefox customizations with millions of users all over the world.

                                 Trivia

There has never been a construction project as massive and
expensive as China's Three Gorges Dam. This gigantic dam, which
will be sixty stories high and 2.3 kilometers long (1.4 miles),
will create a reservoir longer than Lake Superior. Scheduled for
completion in 2013, the Three Gorges Dam is expected to cost $27
billion and will generate as much electricity as would 18
nuclear power plants.

                    Biz-Tips by Dr. Kevin Nunley

Get Attention

I know that the ads in Bob's Newsletters allow headlines but some don't.  Capitalize the first two or three words to  get attention  and pull people into the ad. For example: EARN PROFITS while you  relax and feel better. Try to paint a picture of a better or more  stress-free life. Don't feel the need to make all sentences complete. Classifieds can also use commonly understood  abbreviations. Mention a specific offer with a price for better results.

Not So Smart

Louisiana: A man walked into a Circle-K, put a $20 bill on the counter and asked for change.

When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which the clerk promptly provided.

The man took the cash from the clerk and fled, leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he got from the drawer? ......

Fifteen dollars.

A mother was showing her young son how to zip up his coat. "The secret," she said, "is to get the left part of the zipper to fit in the other side before you try to zip it up."

The boy looked at her quizzically... "Why does it have to be a secret?"

Mark drove his second shot from the fairway, not thinking he'd reach the green being a par 5 and out over 200 yards. The ball did land on the green & almost hit a fellow who was just finishing his putt. Mark went up to apologize and to explain, but the man was irate, yelling & screaming.

The man charged at Mark swinging his putter.

Mark who still had his 3 wood in hand, started swinging back at the man.

When the ambulance and police arrived they took Mark into custody, and asked him how many times he hit the man. Mark replied, "Well I hit him eight times but you can put me down for five."

"An abstract noun," the teacher said, "is something you can think of, but you can't touch it. Can you give me an example of one?"

"Sure," a teenage boy replied. "My father's new car."

                      Health Tip of the Week
                       by Dr. Earl Mindell

Drug Makers Orchestrating Medical Guidelines?

Drug giant Eli Lilly found itself in a quandary in 2002. The company had just lost patent protection on its top seller Prozac. Its drug for sepsis (blood infection, a life-threatening condition that is believed to kill about three-quarters of a million people annually), Xigris, had won the battle for FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval despite an evenly split vote in the advisory committee assigned to evaluate it before it was approved. The drug has been found to reduce mortality from sepsis in some studies, but other evidence has found increased mortality and bleeding problems with Xigris. A single treatment with the drug costs $6,800.00 (only one treatment is indicated). In the end, the FDA had given Eli Lilly the go-ahead and approved the drug, but it just wasn't selling well.

Lilly hired a public-relations team to help them with an "awareness-raising" campaign about sepsis and its treatment. They went out in search of academics who would be willing to help them in their quest to raise awareness. They forked out more than 80 percent of $861,000 in grants to support the campaign and the creation of new guidelines for treating sepsis. Xigris became part of those guidelines.

Sound a little like the fox guarding the henhouse? It did to a lot of other people, too—including three government physicians, who wrote about it in an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine. NIH critical care specialist Naomi O'Grady, M.D. (not one of the article's authors) was quoted in an Associated Press article on the subject, saying that Eli Lilly is "trying to insinuate its drug into many aspects of patient care that industry really shouldn't be involved with."

Let's be fair. When a person is about to die from sepsis, physicians should have any and all options possible at their fingertips to try to save that person's life. But the idea of drug companies mounting awareness-raising campaigns to promote their products runs counter to the impartiality that is necessary for science- and research-based medical practice. And when those campaigns involve drugs that are iffy in terms of safety and effectiveness, the whole thing makes the drug company come out smelling less than rosy. Even if their motives were pure, and even if they ended up standing aside during the actual making of the guidelines—as they and the guideline-makers insist they did not—Lilly went too far here.
