When Mistakes Are OK by Kevin Eikenberry
Tom had some good ideas for improving things at work. He had gathered evidence and background information and was pretty confident his idea would work. But he wouldn’t pull the trigger and try it. He was hesitant because he was afraid of making a mistake.
Larry listened as his neighbor Tom shared his idea – and his hesitancy. Larry saw the world differently. Larry told Tom his approach: “I always ask myself – what is the worst thing that can happen? So what if I make a mistake – it gives me another idea about what does work. That’s what I do on the job – and it seems to work great!”
Tom appreciated - even admired - Larry’s thinking, but he couldn’t see that approach working in his company. He felt the way to success was to avoid mistakes at all costs. Being cautious and careful was clearly the way to a promotion.
We all have our own comfort levels about risk taking and the potential for mistakes, but a big part of how we view mistakes comes not from who we are but from where we work – just like Larry and Tom.
I’m sure you recognize that if we take Tom’s approach to the extreme, nothing ever changes and nothing is ever improved. The larger the repercussions of a mistake (real or perceived), the more risk is involved in trying something new. This leads to people being hesitant to try something new – because they are afraid of the consequences of making a mistake.
To be sure, taking Larry’s approach to the extreme can lead to chaos and very expensive mistakes – frequently.
As with many things we need to strike a balance both for ourselves and in our organizations – a balance where we recognize the risks inherent in mistakes, but we are still willing to try new things and can live with the possible outcomes, even if those outcomes are mistakes.
How do we find this balance?
You will find it by deciding when mistakes are really OK – and when they aren’t. Here are four criteria to help you find that balance individually and as team or organization:
Mistakes are OK if:
* They lead to learning.
* They aren’t repeated.
* They are done in pursuit of your goals and objectives.
* They don’t violate or conflict with your values.
Let’s look at each of these a bit more closely.Mistakes are OK if we learn from them. Remember that one of the best opportunities to learn is when we do something wrong – when we make a mistake. If you reduce the opportunities for mistakes you seriously limit your learning opportunities.
Mistakes are OK if they aren’t repeated. So you make a mistake once – learn from it. If it is a repeated mistake, it is less valuable as a learning experience (unless you’re trying to learn the mistake). In fact anything you did learn from the first mistake, likely will be lost with the repeat performance.
Mistakes are OK if they are done in pursuit of your goals and objectives. To achieve any worthy goal or objective different things must be tried. In order to improve anything you must try a new way. New approaches will sometimes cause mistakes. When the mistake is made trying to achieve the agreed upon goals, what could be wrong with it?
Mistakes are OK if they don’t conflict with your values. If your company values safety and the mistake puts you or those around you at a physical risk, then that mistake isn’t advisable. But if no laws are broken and no values are violated, a mistake shouldn’t carry major repercussions.
Applying These Criteria
Think about these criteria collectively not individually. In other words, a mistake could pass three of the criteria but not the fourth. In this case it isn’t OK. But if it meets all four criteria, my advice is to celebrate the person for taking a risk (or congratulate yourself) and keep moving forward.
With these criteria in place people will become more willing to try new things; to take a bit more risk; and to be less tentative. All of these things will lead to some mistakes – but they will also lead to great opportunities for growth and improvement.
Consider how you can apply these criteria for yourself personally and how you can begin to make them a part of your organizational culture. That decision will lead to a few more errors, and open you up to great opportunities for improvement too.

Trivia
You don't have to weight-train for weeks before you get any benefits. It may take a month or two before workouts get noticeably easier, but you'll shave pounds within a week, and your strength will sharpen. Studies done at Ohio University demonstrate that muscle responds to weight-lifting after only four sessions. It gets better: Recent research suggests that reduced stress, a rosier outlook, more confidence, better sex, and sounder sleep all kick in after one workout.

Free Publicity
Media are constantly looking for new stories and information that will interest their audiences. Chances are, your town has at least one major newspaper, several smaller papers, a few TV stations, a bunch of radio stations, and at least one cable company. Local media like to cover local stories. You have a much better chance of getting free publicity from a reporter in your area than from national media.

"Sure," replies the boy confidently. "It means 'carrying a child.' "

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl MindellNew Evidence That Early Treatment May Beat Watchful Waiting In Men With Prostate Cancer
Standard care for men over 50 involves a yearly PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test and digital rectal exam. These tests are designed to detect prostate cancer while it is localized and small. Most of these cancers are diagnosed in men 65 and older, and in some instances, they are not treated. Instead, the men’s PSA and other parameters are carefully tracked. In many of these instances, the prostate cancer is not what ends up doing the man in, and it never even grows to dimensions large enough to cause symptoms. So many men, particularly older men, are advised to wait and see if the ticking time bomb in their prostate goes off or not.
However, a new study from a team that included investigators at Fox Chase Cancer Center and at the University of Pennsylvania has called the practice of "watchful waiting" into question. Their study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that older men with small, localized prostate cancers may reap more benefit from active treatment than from watchful waiting. These authors estimate that about 30,000 of the 225,000 men diagnosed each year with prostate cancer opt to watchfully wait, but this study could be the beginning of a change in this pattern.
The study involved 44,630 men aged 65 to 80 with localized prostate cancer. Those who underwent treatment—usually, some sort of surgical intervention (chemotherapy, hormone-altering drugs, and radiation are used only when prostate cancer has spread)—were 30 percent less likely to die during the 12-year follow-up than those who waited.
This was an observational study that did not obtain detailed information about side effects from treatment or other quality of life issues. The authors warn that more studies are needed to validate their conclusion that men are better off seeking more aggressive treatment even for small, localized prostate cancers. In my own reading on the subject, I’ve found that surgical techniques for prostate disease are constantly being refined. Today’s high-tech prostate surgeries are minimally invasive and take extra care to avoid damage to nerves that bring sensation and control to the male urogenital system. Men can choose to have laser surgery, cryosurgery (where diseased prostate tissue is destroyed through freezing), or even robotic prostate surgery (where the surgeon uses a robot as an extension of his own hands to do the surgery laparoscopically). The technologies may be at a point where benefit is beginning to exceed risk.
You know that I rarely advise the use of mainstream medicine over alternative therapies, but as a man of a certain age myself, this seemed like news I’d want to know. Also keep in mind that prostate cancer is linked to the same lifestyle issues as many other cancers: too much meat (especially charred meat) in the diet, inflammation, free-radical stress, and obesity. Many research teams—including one led by the illustrious Dean Ornish, M.D., one of the original doctors to study the effects of lifestyle on disease risk and of lifestyle changes on reversal of disease—have found that a very healthful plant-based (vegetarian) diet, stress control through meditation and talk therapy, exercise, and supplements significantly delayed the progression of prostate cancer. Anti-inflammatory herbs and nutrients like ginger, turmeric, holy basil, green tea, and fish oil rich in DHA and EPA have been found to delay the progression of a precancerous prostate condition (prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, or PIN) to prostate cancer.
A good book to read if you or someone you love is affected by prostate disease: Dr. Katz’s Guide to Prostate Health: From Holistic to Conventional Therapies (Freedom Press, 2005). This book was written by Aaron Katz, M.D., an expert urologic surgeon and Columbia University professor who is currently engaged in research on holistic therapies for prostate cancer. It also contains great information about mainstream and alternative treatments for prostate enlargement and prostatitis, both of which are common issues for men.
