Barbary Ape

About 60 Barbary Apes live on Gibralter. The English say that as long as the Barbary Apes are on the Rock, the British will be there also.

This little guy seemed to be on the payroll and actually posed for pictures.

The Barbary Apes are actually monkeys of the Macaques family. These monkeys are primarily Asian. Many live mostly on the ground, and, unlike most monkeys, some can swim. Many are ill-tempered and aggressive. They are hardy and have been successfully established in outdoor colonies in parts of the United States. The Barbary ape of northern Africa is also a macaque. A colony of these monkeys was established and has been maintained for many years on the Rock of Gibraltar by the British.
